What keeps a person non-productive? Are too many people living life expecting someone to validate it, validate them?
How many people find themselves looking around to see what others are doing or have done just to see if what they are planning fits?
Some will say, "yes, I have done that, and I only end up frustrated and boxed-in." If that sounds familiar, know that a person can consciously divorce themselves from labels or being boxed-in.
Most people are notorious for stereotyping others by their given or chosen title. Honestly, know that people do not have a single title.
Many people are overbearing when pushing their style of thinking and doing on others - the box-in method. Honestly, there are various ways of accomplishing everything.
Tagging "What Do You Do?"
Hidden or Mindful Stereotyping?
People will often pin a label on others or try to box in a person by simply asking, "what do you do?" Or, asking
- "Are you a professional speaker?"
- "Are you an athlete?"
- "Are you a business executive?"
- "Are you a web developer?"
- "Are you an entrepreneur?"
- "Are you a marketer?"
- "Are you a socialist?"
- "Are you a republican or democratic?"
- "Are you a member of the ____ country club?"
- "Are you a/an _____ (you fill in the blank)?"
For example, one person says, "I am a software engineer," and the other person immediately stereotypes them by replying, "You are one of those computer nerds."
As a result of stereotyping, some people may choose to let the traditional "what do you do" question go unanswered. It will not matter because the person asking or listening in will immediately assign a label based on that interaction such as strange, disrespectful, nasty, unfriendly, suspicious, weak, insignificant, hostile, nasty, low-class, impolite, dishonest, etcetera.
Who wants a label placed on them that may lead to unpopular stereotyping?
Even if a person does not want their life defined/confined in one word or two words, everyone needs to control the narrative as much as possible.
That is why people must know themselves, be aware of who they are, and believe in themselves. Plus, have the wisdom and understanding that labels are just easily changeable words, and in some settings, tags/labels can be useful.
There are different elements to everyone; why deciding on a single label is challenging. For example, a motivational type person may believe they must never be labeled or boxed-in. They may have always thought that way. How does a person like this put a single label on themselves?
Whether it holds acceptable or not, many believe that we are operating in the assignments given to us. How do we label that?
We must use our best judgment when deciding the best situation to use a particular title or label. When in doubt, remember the label we give ourselves today is an easily changeable word tomorrow.
A Sensation of Being Boxed-in, Limited?
Structured or Unstructured - Which is Most Desirable?
Living with a structured (highly-defined) or unstructured environment at home, work, or in play is tough to say with 100% certainty that one way or the other is the perfect answer. Many situations require a little bit of both, or only one or the other.
For this article, we will discuss the ramifications of creative (free-spirited) people being in a highly structured environment.
When someone says only to do a thing one specific way, be great at asking why. Either ask 'why' or accept the status quo.
For illustration, a friend took a job where they told him when to go to lunch when to go to the restroom, what he needs to do and how he needs to do it, how he should think, be, and do. We understand it was because many people can think but do not trust what they see or their ability to use the brain to make the right decision. So, management steps in and defines a structured step-by-step rule to help that set of people. Still, those rules hinder the enthusiasm.
Furthermore, working at places like that will block creativity and stifle motivation when making every effort to fit in, and that will not work. Why?
Free spirits (individualists) who should never be boxed-in, find that they work better in an unstructured environment. The unstructured setting allows a person to devote their whole self to work and produce good results. (Keep in mind that unstructured does mean the environment is unorganized, chaotic, or in disarray.)
Heard the saying, "If there are boundaries, I will try to knock them down?" Does that describe a familiar feeling? If so, keep asking 'why' as often as respectfully possible.
Ever notice when one person makes demands, and another person may not feel good about what they being told to do, but do it out of respect or fear? Tell why any person should feel bullied to commit to another person's choice of actions?
Ever ask why does that happen more often than not?
- "Why should I do that? Tell more, please."
- "Why do you think I should go this way?"
- "Why do you believe I should dress your way?"
- "Why should I create this kind of business?"
Tradition: Is it Worthwhile or Just Stuck in Time
Many times, people get stuck in tradition. Being stuck says, "this is the way we always do it, so this is the way you should do it too."
Staying real is the way that we flourish, as a world, at any level of history. Being authentic allows a person to have the vision to understand that there are many different and unique ways to do things.
Being true to oneself is the reason we can fly around the world; Alberto Santos-Dumont and the Wright Brothers broke the "rules" and asked why.
There are so many things in our lives that people tell us we can do or cannot do. We begin to conform to the opinions of others. That tends to limit our potential because our potential lies in our vision.
Who wants an action demanded of them that may lead to unwelcoming stereotyping? So, control the narrative.
Knowing, Grasping those Visions, Dreams
Our vision is what we see when closing our eyes and picturing in our thought. It is that moment of inspiration when we imagine ourselves doing something, and we are living it out in our minds. Too, we feel like we are there, and we are thinking, "Oh my goodness, this is me."
Then we will ruin it when opening up our eyes, looking around, and thinking, "Oh, that is not realistic."
Set ourselves free to be who we are. We will be a much better person, employee, entrepreneur, spouse, sibling, friend, overall person.
- Fulfilling our potential in life is being unrealistic.
- Fulfilling our potential in life is breaking the rules.
- Fulfilling our potential in life is being chancy.
- Fulfilling our potential in life is not to do what everyone else is doing and not conforming.
- We are fulfilling our potential in life is learning how to align our decision-making and taking the actions according to the vision we see.
Some of us have been a rebel all our life. A lot of it is because we do not see life the way other people see it. We question it and get in long drawn out discussion for the asking why.
It is asking why do we have to do it this way. It may get us in a lot of friendly conversations. Most of all, it helps to understand others when they take the time to explain their 'why' to us.
The more we grow in life, we will realize that we are right. Yes, we are challenging a traditional way of doing things. Plus, some people do not like anyone to challenge them.
If feeling stuck or controlled, then a person may need to begin owning being a rebel with a cause. Not in a disrespectful way. A rebel fight against something. For this reason, many people do not like the term rebel. It is okay if a person is battling against something that goes against who they are.
Many successful people I know go against any mediocrity. They fight against being typical. They fight against blending in.
They fight against doing things the way everybody else does it just because that is the way that they do it.
Be in the Know - Analysis is Essential
Be sure to do the work and researching things when in doubt. That work and research will allow having an open conversation and let others gain new insight.
If doing something for the sake of "it has always been done this way" does not fall into alignment with the vision that you have, you may choose not to do it. If being given a label (title) does not feel right or agree with you, then take steps to change that perception.
It is okay to ask why, and if still, people say that our way of doing something is wrong, keep asking why. Then go out and show them by successfully doing it the way that feels right.
Hoping this article jump-starts progression to a more successful personal and work life. Wishing everyone well.
